Today, whilst continuing my studies, I attempted to open a serial connection on putty (/dev/ttyUSB) and it says 'unable to open serial port'. So not the microsoft update as I thought. I have resolved the problem which turned out to be due to an Adobe acrobat update reassigning the PDF printer to com1. If you are not able to connect your device to your PC using a USB to Serial adapter it may be that.
